Dr. Ashok B. Raj, MD is a Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of Louisville and served as the inaugural Division Chief of the Norton Children’s Cancer Institute (2016–2024). He completed pediatric residency at SUNY Stony Brook and fellowship training in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, NIH. Dr. Raj has been on the University of Louisville faculty since 2000 (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, then Professor since 2010) and previously held academic and clinical positions in West Virginia and Florida. His career centers on pediatric cancer and hematologic disorders, with longstanding expertise in sickle cell disease, hemophilia and bleeding/thrombosis, and histiocytic disorders. He has served as an institutional principal investigator for major national consortia and multicenter studies, including the Children’s Oncology Group, Beat Childhood Cancer, the North American Consortium on Histiocytosis, and HRSA-funded EMBRACE-SCD, and has contributed to national protocol development through the Sickle Cell Disease Clinical Research Network. His leadership includes service on university, hospital, and state committees—most notably appointment to the Kentucky Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund Board (2017–2024)—along with sustained community engagement through educational initiatives and the Sickle Cell Association of Kentuckiana. Dr. Raj’s work is reflected in peer-reviewed publications, invited lectures, and recognition including the 2023 Norton Children’s Hospital Doctor’s Day award for most responsive physician.
