At the completion of this lecture attendees should be able to:

• Describe some of the major changes that have occurred in clinical microbiology testing over the past 3 decades
• Discuss options for incorporating automated culture systems into the workflow for clinical specimens such as blood and urine
• Identify newer automated technologies available to improve the timeliness of organism identification and susceptibility testing
