Date & Time of Session - 6/4/26 - from 12-1PM

Overview
Multidrug-resistant organisms are an increasing threat to health outcomes, and inappropriate antimicrobial use remains a major contributor to resistance, avoidable adverse events, and unnecessary healthcare costs. These challenges highlight the need for education to improve antimicrobial utilization and agent selection.

This session will provide an evidence-based review of MDR organisms, their mechanisms of resistance, and practical guidance on appropriate antimicrobial selection. An emphasis will be placed on scenarios in which commonly selected antimicrobials are not clinically useful due to intrinsic resistance, resistance mechanisms, or inadequate penetration to the infection site. The overall goal of this education is to empower pharmacists to support optimal antimicrobial decision-making and reduce preventable treatment failures.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe common multidrug-resistant organisms and their mechanisms of resistance.
2. Discuss how resistance mechanisms influence antimicrobial selection.
3. Identify clinical scenarios in which novel antibiotics should be avoided.
