Date & Time of Session - 5/21/26 - from 12-1PM
Overview
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) medications have seen a significant increase in usage over recent years to account for expanding indications, such as diabetes, weight loss and sleep apnea. With this increased usage, more patients are presenting to our urgent care, hospital, and outpatient facilities with adverse drug events (ADEs) associated with GLP1s. With more patients receiving these medications from compounded or direct-from-manufacturer sources, the continuity of care to mitigate ADEs has become more disrupted. A review of medication-associated ADEs ranging from mild (nausea, constipation, reflux, nutritional deficiencies) to severe (AKI, bowel obstruction, dehydration, malnutrition) are important to review so that pharmacists may assist in the safe and appropriate management of these medications and assist in identifying causation at various transitions of care. This presentation aims to provide an evidence-based overview of the safety and efficacy of GLP1s, highlighting key trials, guideline recommendations, and practical considerations for its implementation into clinical practice.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Review the pharmacologic and clinical differences between various GLP-1 medications
2. Discuss current evidence for use of GLP-1 medications in diabetes and weight management
3. Identify appropriate dosing strategies and safety considerations for use of GLP-1 medications
