Date & Time of Session - 3/24/26 - from 12:00 - 1:00PM
Overview
Antibiotic use in pregnancy is a clinically challenging area of pharmacotherapy, requiring assessment of maternal benefit compared to potential fetal risk in the setting of limited and often low-quality data. As medication experts, pharmacists are uniquely positioned to interpret this imperfect evidence, assess teratogenic potential, understand trimester-specific risks, and guide interprofessional teams through nuanced risk-versus-benefit decisions. Enhancing pharmacists’ competence in evaluating the literature, counseling patients, and making evidence-informed recommendations in pregnancy strengthens clinical decision-making in a high-stakes population and fulfills an important educational gap in contemporary pharmacy practice.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Explain how fetal drug toxicity risk changes during each stage of pregnancy and lactation
2. Conduct risk-versus-benefit assessments to make appropriate antibiotic recommendations for pregnant and lactating patients
3. Identify available resources to provide further guidance when evaluating medication safety in pregnancy and lactation
