Overview
Patients with advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease are 50% more likely to be hospitalized compared to patients who do not have Parkinson’s disease. For patients who are hospitalized, they are at an increased risk of not receiving home Parkinson’s medications on time, having longer lengths of stay, and returning to the hospital within one year. To better care for this patient population and prevent further progression/complications of their disease, there is need to better understand (1) the nature of advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease and (2) the differences between available levodopa formulations, and (3) overall considerations for patients when hospitalized. This session will aim to provide various techniques and tactics that pharmacists can utilize when caring for patients with Parkinson’s disease who are admitted to the hospital.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Discuss advanced Parkinson’s disease pathophysiology and its implications on motor symptom treatment.
2. Manage admitted patients with Parkinson’s disease through appropriate resumption of home levodopa therapy and/or conversion between differing formulations.
3. Critically review non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic considerations for Parkinson’s disease-associated psychosis.
