Overview
Adverse drug reactions are common but identifying a true drug allergy can be difficult. Clinical symptoms and multiple mechanisms of drug-host interaction are poorly understood. The limited laboratory testing available for diagnosing a drug allergy makes the diagnosis dependent on clinical findings. Pharmacists have a role in helping to identify a true drug allergy and are responsible for understanding and recommending alternative therapy. In some cases, pharmacists are responsible for managing or following up with the patient in collaboration with the provider. Therefore, it is important for pharmacists to understand how to navigate hypersensitivity reactions.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Review types of hypersensitivity reactions
2. Identify appropriate alternative agents to use following a drug reaction
3. Develop a treatment approach for patients with hypersensitivity reactions
