Date & Time of Session - 10/26/26 - from 12:00 - 1:00 PM
Overview
Perioperative medical emergencies are rare but potentially life-threatening events that require prompt recognition and intervention to optimize patient outcomes. Pharmacists practicing in various inpatient settings may be called upon to assist with the management of these critical situations and should therefore maintain familiarity with the clinical presentation and treatment strategies. This presentation will focus on three perioperative medical emergencies: malignant hyperthermia, local anesthetic systemic toxicity, and vasoplegic syndrome. Key aspects of each condition, including the underlying pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, and current evidence-based treatment strategies, will be reviewed. By enhancing awareness of these high-acuity events and therapies used to manage them, pharmacists can play a critical role in facilitating rapid intervention and improving patient outcomes.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Identify risk factors and clinical presentation associated with MH, LAST, and VS.
2. Review the pathophysiology and evidence-based pharmacologic management strategies of perioperative medical emergencies, including rescue therapies and supportive care measures.
3. Discuss the role of clinical pharmacists in emergency preparedness and multidisciplinary response during perioperative medical emergencies.
