Date & Time of Session - 6/1/26 - from 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Overview
Proton pump inhibitors are associated with increased risk for several complications, including C. difficile infections, community-acquired pneumonia, and fractures. Therefore, it is important to know when and how to deprescribe this class of medication. This begins with a review of the patient’s indications for a proton pump inhibitor and assessment of the patient’s risk for complications associated with discontinuing this medication. During this presentation, I would like to review which patients are appropriate for a deprescribing trial, when to initiate this trial, and whether the proton pump inhibitor should be tapered.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the importance of deprescribing proton pump inhibitors
2. Recommend the appropriate time to deprescribe a proton pump inhibitor in a hospitalized patient
3. Determine which patients should not be considered for a deprescribing trial
