Date & Time of Session - 3/16/26 - from 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Overview
Acute traumatic brain injuries (TBI) require rapid management to preserve brain function and prevent mortality. A potential complication of TBI includes elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). Although other etiologies such as stroke or infection can also cause ICP, this presentation will focus on ICP secondary to TBI. The foundation of successful ICP management is hyperosmolar therapy. The primary intravenous solutions that create an osmotic gradient to reduce cranial swelling are hypertonic saline and mannitol. Drug selection is patient specific based on a patient’s hemodynamic status, electrolyte levels, and physician assessment. This CE activity will equip pharmacists to differentiate between mannitol and hypertonic saline, monitor the safe and effective use of both treatments, and contribute to the care of TBI patients with elevated ICP admitted to the intensive care unit.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Review the pathophysiology and management of elevated intracranial pressure due to traumatic brain injury in the intensive care unit
2. Identify differences in safety and efficacy between hypertonic saline compared to mannitol for the treatment of elevated intracranial pressure
