Needs/Overview
Successful management of Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) of newborn babies relies on rapid initiation of infant assessment and therapy due to the time sensitive nature of therapeutic cooling associated with improved outcomes. This presentation will review the fundamentals of HIE and cover the rationale behind available management strategies. We will review the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and management of HIE. Additionally, we will review neonatal seizure treatment since that is a potential complication of HIE. Correct anti-seizure medication selection and dosing is critical in neonates. Considering the paucity of data regarding medication administration in neonates pharmacists should be familiar with anti-seizure medication information as applied to the neonatal population.

Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Review the management of HIE and the qualifying criteria for therapeutic hypothermia
2. Identify appropriate anti-seizure therapy in neonates including dosing and safety concerns
