Date & Time of Session - 12/17/25 - from 2:30 - 3:30PM
Overview
The ongoing opioid crisis has highlighted the urgent need for safer approaches to pain management. Traditional opioid-centric strategies, while effective for acute pain, carry significant risks including dependence, overdose, abuse, and adverse effects. In response, organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), and the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) have issued guidelines promoting opioid-sparing techniques—including multimodal analgesia and non-opioid pharmacologic therapies—to reduce opioid exposure while maintaining adequate pain control. These approaches are especially critical in acute care settings, where minimizing opioid use can enhance recovery, reduce adverse effects, and support long-term safety.
Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:
1. Describe the rationale and evidence supporting opioid-sparing strategies in acute pain management.
2. Develop a multimodal analgesia regimen based on evidence-based recommendations, incorporating patient-specific factors into clinical decision-making.
