Pre-Presentation Questions:

  1. A patient presents to your clinic with diabetic macular edema in both eyes and high-risk proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Their vision is 20/30 OU. What is the best management plan?
    1. An updated refraction with recommendations for tight blood pressure, blood glucose, and lipid control and follow up in 2-3 months. 
    2. Intravitreal anti-VEGF injections
    3. Vitrectomy, membrane peeling, and endolaser panretinal photocoagulation
    4. All of the above
  2. Your patient with fovea involving geographic atrophy asks you about any ways to see better. They follow with the low vision clinic. Their vision is 20/500. What do you tell them?
    1. There is a surgical implant that has completed a phase 3 trial that could improve your vision. 
    2. There is an injection medication that could improve your vision, and we will refer you to a retinal specialist for evaluation. 
    3. There is an injection medication that exists for geographic atrophy, but it will not be helpful due to how advanced your condition is.

  3. You are a retina specialist. A 60 year old patient presents to your clinic at 4:30PM on Friday with macula-on retinal detachment 1 o clock to 9 o clock. There is a single break at 1 o clock. What would you like to do?
    1. Cry
    2. Perform a pneumatic retinopexy with same day cryopexy
    3. Perform a pneumatic retinopexy with planned laser prophylaxis
    4. Take the patient to the OR tonight for an urgent retinal detachment repair with scleral buckling, pars plana vitrectomy, ILM peeling, endolaser, and gas tamponade. 
    5. Take the patient to the OR on your next planned surgery day for pars plana vitrectomy, endolaser, and gas tamponade
    6. A, and any of the other options.
